Pompeii used to be a busy prosperous city, barely different from the others. On August 23th 79AD however, Mount Vesuvius ( which was silent for 15,000 years) erupted. On 79AD, no one knew what a volcano was, and they also did not have the word "volcano" in Latin. At 1pm, when Mount Vesuvius erupted, all that spurted out was foam, not lava.
Mount Vesuvius was just a normal mountain to everyone in Pompeii in that day.Everyone thought that the foam rising in the air nothing to worry about. They had never known of them before, so they just ignored it and continued working.
Pompeii was surrounded by smoke, blocking the sun. Day turned to night, and crops could not grow. People stopped what they were doing and wondered why it would have suddenly turned dark.
Everyone at Pompeii saw ash and stones showering down afterward. The stones falling down could kill them if they were hit on the head by it. The uncle of Pliny the Younger was fascinated by the volcano so he decided to take his boat to see the volcano from close up. Most of the People thought that the falling stones were a punishment from God, and prayed to him asking for forgiveness.
Interestingly enough, slaves fled from their master trying to leave the city, even thought they knew that if they got caught, they would be prosecuted. Other people fled as well, trying to spare their lives, and their child's as well. Some people could not leave Pompeii, because of many reasons. Nearly all the houses were deserted seven hours later, and all the people were stranded on the beach desperately looking for help from nearby cities.
In an instant, Volcanic lava sped down the volcano, heading straight towards the beach. The volcanic gas was 5 times hotter than boiling water, instantly burning all the people that were on the beach. The lava boiled brains, shattered teeth and bones, and turned the remains into charcoal. There was a cloud of toxic gas at Pompeii other than lava, but the gas was just as deadly. The remaining people who were trapped at Pompeii got their eyes and throat burned by the toxic gas. After the deadly eruption from mount Vesuvius, every last person in Pompeii was dead.
